90 Year Old takes Mobility Scooter onto busy road

Most pensioners reach an age when they are quite content to take things a bit more slowly and enjoy their old age. Not Stanley Murphy, the 90-year-old who unwittingly took to driving his mobility scooter onto the A27.

As motorists hurtling past him along the busy major road that runs through Sussex, they must have been surprised to discover the pensioner crawling along the carriageway in his 8mph mobility scooter.

Stanley Murphy, from Shoreham, near Hove, was obviously startled by this adventure. He had only nipped out to buy a newspaper at lunchtime. It took just one wrong turn and he was suddenly travelling westbound along the A27 towards the Shoreham flyover with other road users hurtling past him at great speeds.

One motorist however who did spot Mr Murphy decided to pull over and attempt to flag down the slow-moving scooter, while also calling the police.

The pensioner eventually pulled in and was obviously shell-shocked by the ordeal.

Police arrived soon afterwards and gave Mr Murphy a lift back home. The helpful motorist loaded the scooter onto his truck and drove it back for him.

Once home, Mr Murphy expressed his gratitude to everyone who ensured the day ended safely: “I don’t know how I ended up on the A27 but I am thankful to everyone who helped me.”

A Sussex police spokesman said that by law as electric mobility scooters are mechanically propelled vehicles, a tax disc and number plate is required before it can be driven on a main road. In this case, it was safe to say the pensioner was let-off and no further action was taken.
