A new study has been unearthed that is using bluetooth technology to track individuals within the UK without their knowledge or consent.
The name of this campaign is the Cityware Study and has the aim to ” to develop theory, principles, tools and techniques for the design, implementation and evaluation of city-scale pervasive systems as integral facets of the urban landscape.
Pardon…what the hell does that mean.
According to a report in the Guardian newspaper published today the Cityware researchers at Bath University have ” installed scanners at secret locations in offices, campuses, streets and pubs to pinpoint people’s whereabouts. The scanners, the first 10 of which were installed in Bath three years ago, are capturing Bluetooth radio signals transmitted from devices such as mobile phones, laptops and digital camera’s, and using data to follow unwitting targets without there permission.”
Eammon O’Niell, Cityware’s director claims his study is not interested in tracking individuals but is more ” Interested in the aggregate behaviour of the city dwellers as a whole” also saying that “the notion that any agency would seriously consider Bluetooth scanning as a surveillance technique is ludicrous.”
Simon Davies of Privacy international has aired his concerns that this technology could be used as the CCTV of the mobile industry. Saying that if the technology is as safe as they claim then all specifications should be published and people should be informed when they are being tracked.
I say ” It always feels like some body’s watching me” ever heard that one before.
