Clipboard Security at Risk

Security firms are sending a warning today about a new attack that affects the clipboard where copied text is stored. The attack puts a hard to delete weblink into the clipboard which results in people being taken to a website that is selling false security software.

The code responsible for attaching the link has been found in a number of flash based adverts on a number of legitimate websites, and has affected both mac and Microsoft users of the FireFox Browser.

The attack seems to work by exploiting adobe flash files used to make display adverts seeming to endlessly flush the clipboard of other text and continually insert the malciuos link in its place.

People have reported having to re-boot there machines in order to rid themselves of the virus, while others have resorted to killing the FireFox process thread.

Mikko Hypponen Chief Research officer at security firm F secure said this was an interesting attack that he had not come across before.
