According to reports in The Times today Georgia have accused the russian government of waging cyber war. Georgia said that Russia had used hacking techniques to block key government websites but would not specify the extent of the attacks. In defence of the Russian government two large independent internet montoring companies said they had found no evidence to back this claim.
The attacks are comprised of hackers using a style called “denial of service attacks” this is where websites are bombarded with millions of hits, causing them to crash.
A Georgian government spokesman said that at one point hackers had replaced the image of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs with a image of President Saakashvilli stood next to Adolf Hitler.
The MFA reacted by setting up an alternative website hosted by the Google owned blogging service.
This a another story raising questions about security of websites showing that even governments are not safe.
