Face Transplant

Not exactly a gadget but I think this does testify to the advances in medical technology and a very interesting story non the less and well worth a read.

No one would have thought that a full face transplant was possible nor would you want to believe that someone would want this procedure, but in extreme cases this may be deemed necessary. One such case is the story of one Chinese patient that suffer a severe attack at the hands (or paws however you want to put it) of a bear. His face was slashed and resulted in extensive damage and leaving the only alternative of a full face transplantFourth Military Medical University in Xi’anas reconstrustion was not possible. The operation was lead by Shuzhong Guo of the Chinese Fourth Military Medical University in Xi’an. Although this is not considered as a full face transplant it does beak new gound in this area of medical science. This is the third such operation to take place as far as we know and opens up the ethical debate of is the procedure acceptable.

This operation was the first to include facial bone in the procedure and without this reconstruction of the nose and upper lip would not be possible as stated by the medical team. They also managed to transplant muscle, nerves, blood vessels, cartlidge, skin and another first a salivary galnd. The sucess of this operation can be counted on the fact that two years on the man eat, drink, speak quite a amazing feat.

This really does bode the question just what is possible in the field of medical science.
