File sharing crackdown

Residents in the UK will be sent letters to warn them about illegally downloading files such as music and films. The new government plan was drawn up with the country’s 6 biggest Internet providers, letters will sent in a 3 month trial advising that they are being monitored. Many of the letters will be sent to parents that are not aware that there children are downloading these files illegally.

Ofcom will be working with ISP’s and media companies to decided on a course of action if the letters have no effect. There is talk of a three strikes and your out policy but is yet to be decided.

Media reports suggest that the government might introduce a £30 levy charge on every Internet connection to compensate the music and film industries.
