Most people would be surprised that bingo has been around for centuries in some form or another with the first elements being traced back to Italy around 1530 ad. The Italians called their version of the game Lo Giuoco del Lotto D’Italia this form of the game is still played to this day every Saturday night. France were the next country to try their hand at the early forms of bingo with their version being called “Le Lotto” this was a game played by those with money to burn in the 1770’s.
The first game of bingo as we now know it was played in North America in 1929 and was called beano this was then renamed bingo after a travelling salesman from New York heard one of the early bingo enthusiasts shout bingo instead of beano. This salesman was called Carl Leffler and he soon set about improving bingo with the help of a maths professor from Columbia University. They increased the number of combinations in bingo cards to 6000, it was this work that actually sent Carl Leffler clinically insane.
Today bingo is still going strong and is as popular ever with thousands of people playing online bingo everyday.
