Quite a few of our gadgets are not known for their ruggedness. Drop it off of a table or spill coffee over it and you’ll end up stripping it down to try to get it working again. Probably one of the easiest gadgets to break would be a Tablet Computer. So Trimble has introduced us to the Trimble Yuma Rugged Tablet Computer.
What is known about it so far is it is constructed with a 7 inch sunlight readable touchscreen display with WVGA resolution and 1024 x 600 pixels. Internally it holds a 1.6GHz Intel Atom processor and the 945 GSE chipset. Storage comes in the form of a 32GB SSD, ideal for the punishment this Tablet could see.
It also sports 2 USB ports, an Expresscard slot and an SDIO slot. Bluetooth 2.0, 802.11b/g WiFi and GPS provide connectivity and there are two integrated cameras. It can also be docked for more intensive keyboard work in the Windows Vista Business operating system.
What has been indicated is the environments it can withstand. It is sealed, giving it total protection from dust and can be submerged in water down to 3.3 feet. Its operating temperature range is from -22 to 140 degrees Fahrenheit.
It will be aimed at those industries that work in these sorts of environments, but I’m sure there will be a few in the commercial world for the likes of you and me.
