Home Communications Gadget

Most of the communications gadgets we buy tend to be for carrying around with us and the ones that are static we run through our PCs. At the Consumer Electronics Show in Vegas recently, the Iriver Wave Home was revealed which is a kind of halfway house between the 2. It combines a communications hub with a networked multimedia device.

The unit consists of a 7 inch touchscreen which allows you to access music, videos, photos and the web. Also bundled with it is an FM radio with the audio for all of these sent through its built in stereo speakers. A wireless handset comes with the Iriver Wave Home allowing you to make VoIP calls and sitting at the top of the frame is a 1.3 megapixel CMOS camera giving the added ability of making and receiving video calls which you can dial using the virtual keypad on screen.

Other features include an SD card slot, USB connectivity, an Ethernet port and digipen input support. An intelligent widget provides traffic updates, instant weather and stock updates and with the ability to connect to the internet via the connection to broadband, there is also support for SMS and MMS texts and flash based games without the need to switch on your PC.

Maybe this gadget could replace the phone and make video calling more commonplace. Time will tell.
