BBC News have an article on how IBM are looking to create the next generation of storage devices, by manipulating the magnetic fields generated by the spin of electrons. With the potential to store hundreds of times more data per area compared to existing devices this could mean future handheld devices and computers alike could hold thousands of hours of video. IBM have put a timescale of 4 years on creating a prototype of ‘Racetrack Memory’ with a further 3-4 years on putting it to commercial use.
