The kindle, while being a great gadget for bookworms in the US, doesn’t have a service in the UK. And while it is on its second incarnation, what alternatives are there available for us over this side of the pond.
The Sony eReader has a partnership with Waterstones which is available in store or online. Its 6 inch display is easy to read and does allow for text resizing. The battery has a life of 6800 page turns and there is support for multiple formats.
Nintendo DS has a 100 Classic Book Collection that can be viewed on it while you hold the device vertically like a book. Authors include Hardy, Lewis Carroll, Dickens, Shakespeare, Robert Louis Stevenson and the Bronte Sisters. You turn the page with a swipe of your finger across the touch screen.
The Bookeen Cybook Gen3 can hold up to 10000 books and is very light with a good screen size. The whole package makes it easy to carry around.
The iRex 1000 ebook is aimed at the business professional. It has a 10.2 inch screen which gives easy referencing of PowerPoint presentations, PDF files, JPEG or HTML. Storage is from a changeable 1Gb SD card and the battery is claimed to last for several days.
The Google Mobile Reader gives you access to 1.5 million books via a mobile friendly site and the pages flow like a web page. This does mean your phone battery will drain pretty quickly.
