A computerised “magic mirror” has been developed that can show muscular activity in real-time. It shows the user’s muscles working during exercise. The system has been developed by IRT (Information and Robot Technology Research Initiative) under the leadership of Professor Yoshihiko Nakamura.
In a demonstration recently a male model was put through his paces, all of the while he was connected to 16 electromyographs (these are what record the muscle activity) and being watched by 10 motion capture cameras and a couple of floor sensors to record force on the legs. The system, at the moment, can only monitor about 30 percent of the body’s skeletal muscle.
What is shown on the monitor is muscles in different colours depending on how hard it is being worked at that time. Allowing this to happen in real-time is the new software that is 10 times faster than previous technology and can monitor the subject even at a fast pace.
It is hoped that this gadget will eventually be used in hospitals, gyms and even homes allowing the user to know what movements work a particular muscle the most and so aiding fitness. Not only this, but Doctors can benefit by treating conditions that affect the muscles more effectively. With this in mind the developers are working on a more compact system.
