As the years go by and laptops get replaced for thinner and thinner versions, the need for expansion docks become increasingly more important. Manufacturers will make extra profit by supplying their own versions for their models. Kensington, however, have taken the step in bringing a gadget that will negate the need for buying that expensive, branded device. They have come up with a unit that can provide USB ports and a VGA connection that only requires a spare USB port on your laptop.
The 250mm wedge shaped casing contains 4 powered USB ports, an external VGA monitor connection, a 10/100Mb/s Ethernet port and a microphone and headphone sockets. Compatible operating systems are Windows XP and Vista, plus MAC OS X 10.4.11.
The video connection uses a DisplayLink system which compresses the video data to get it over the USB connection. Then through decompression by the DisplayLink hardware in the dock, the information is sent out as a VGA signal. An external screen and the laptop screen can be run as the same image or they can be run as one screen spread over the both of them. Resolution for the external screen can be set to anything up to 1280 x 1024.
The dock comes with a rubber pad on top to allow you to set your laptop on it to give it a tilt to increase airflow around it. It can be had for around £50.
