New technology has been devised to help surgeons complete complicated surgery when more than one pair of hands would come in handy.
The technology has been incorporated into the Da Vinci surgical robot which is a tool that helps surgeons with keyhole surgery by mimicking their hand movements. A team from Hamlyn Centre for Robotic Surgery at the Imperial College of London have created a device that uses the surgeons gaze to direct certain tools needed for the surgery. An LED light is shone onto the eyes and the cameras track the movement of the pupils and the “glint” of reflected light on the cornea to calculate where the surgeon is looking. This is controlled by a foot pedal as the device is only used in certain parts of the procedure.
