I don’t know about you, but I am increasingly using the internet to do my banking. Any transfer of money I need to make, I will do it online rather than go down to the bank, take out the money and deposit it into my other account. But this leaves me open to things like the Trojan “Silent Banker”. Symantec has stated that “The Trojan can intercept transactions that require two-factor authentication. It can then silently change the user-entered destination bank account details to the attacker’s account details instead”.
To overcome this kind of threat IBM have introduced the ZTIC (Zone Trusted Information Channel). This is a little gadget that has a display and minimal I/O capabilities and runs the TLS/SSL protocol. It connects to the USB port on your computer and bypasses all of the PC’s software for security. To do this it registers itself as a mass storage device that requires no driver installation. Once connected it uses a pass through proxy to connect to pre-configured websites.
When the webpage is opened to the bank all data passes through the ZTIC and its SSL session, with keys generated on the ZTIC, is protected.
The main selling point for this product, as opposed to others that are around, is the fact that it doesn’t rely on software installed on the PC which is open to attack.
