Sun take a gamble with lasers

Sun Microsystems have recently received $44 million in funding from DARPA to try and break Moore’s Law by using lasers to interconnect computer chips together, potentially being able to improve on current computing speeds by up to a thousand fold.   Currently silicon chips maximum speeds are limited by the need to transport data around the surrounding architecture causing major bottlenecks, the idea in the future will be to use lasers to take place of the current pathways (or Bus as they are humorously called).  These lasers will be capable of transmitting tens of billions of bits per second between chips, allowing for some revolutionary computer designs to be made.  Currently Sun say they are a long way off and deem their project as having a possible 50% chance of success but that they remain positive it will be possible.
