Track day experiences are a must

Not really a gadget but something I felt I should mention here. I recently went on a track day driving experience at the Silverstone race track in Northampton. Now you can buy these for yourself or others so i guess it is a “toy” or “present” of some sort.

The car of choice at this experience was in fact a Formula 3 car. This car is probably the closest you can get to a Formula 1 experience without actually paying the premium for it. It is so fast that the organisers weren’t talking about 0-60mph times, more like 0-100mph times, which were insanely quick. The top speed of these cars is up to 175mph. So these may not be as fast as some supercars like the Audi R8, but it is the speed at which the F3 car gets up to 175mph.

On to my experience in the F3 car. First of all, wow, the speed is really good and the brakes were superb. What impressed me the most was the cornering speeds that this thing could manage. This was all down to the slick tyres that were bolted on. In most corners we were told you could practically feather the throttle and go almost flat, unless you are me and a little insane, because I went completely flat through those corners hanging the backend out.

Shamefully it wasn’t the first time I’ve had the backend of a car twitching. I’ve accomplished that feat on a few back roads, all within the speed limit of course.

At the debrief session, we were all told that the F3 car as good as it is, is actually nowhere near the power or handling of a F1 car. That is amazing as I can’t imagine anything quicker that the F3. Incidentally, I was more than 4.5 seconds faster than the next guy on the track day, and he was a regular at track days. Must be the next Michael Schumacher.
