Western Digital, the creators of the slightly dated 3.5″ 10,000rpm Raptor drives have now moved on to produce the VelociRaptor. Based on a 2.5″ hard disk design, with a speed of 10,000rpm and weighing in at 300Gb the VelociRaptor outperforms its predecessor by up to 30% and when it hits the stores will cost similar prices to the current 150Gb Raptor drives. By shrinking the size down to 2.5″ this decreases the access time (the head has less of a distance to cover) and also increases the maximum throughput (increased memory-density-per-volume) meaning the VelociRaptor is going to be the next big thing in the high-end desktop and low-end server market. Currently the only drives that actually beat Western Digitals monstrosity are high-end server disks based on an SAS interface and spinning at 15,000rpm and cost a lot more than even a hardcore pc-enthusiast would want to pay.
Currently available in Alienware pc’s, the drive will be available for separate purchase next month.
